Tall bikin’ again

If the point of the Pleasant Revolution is to spread joy through music and bicycles, then surely no vehicle accomplishes the job quite like a tall bike with tunes on it. Tall bikes break down the cynical fences and defenses of dare I say 98.3% of passers by. They make people smile, not least of which the people operating them.

I have a tall long bike (or is it long tall?) at home, notable for its upstairs passenger-toting capacity. I’ve dreamed of taking her on the road, but it just doesn’t make sense. Too much wind resistance, too much getting up and down, not enough relaxation. Not that people don’t tour with tall bikes (Africa, Asia), but probably not with a 150 pound load, not me anyway.

Instead, I think, why not just build a take-a-part tall bike that I can re- and de-construct for every bicycle music festival along the way? Continue reading →

Sziget Festival, New Media, and Tour Dates!

We find ourselves at a poetic convergence of time and place: exactly half way through our European journey and at the Eastern most point of our travels; Budapest, Hungary. We have loved following our trusted guide, the Donau river, over the last month, but are also eager to meet the ocean and begin our path westward.

8/14 – Pleasant Revolution played at one of Europe’s largest and most celebrated festivals here in Budapest, The Sziget, with over 400,000 visitors. As guests of the US Embassy, we were grateful for the opportunity to represent a different side of the US than many people of the world get to see. You can read some of the press of the event at :

We have finalized our route and added new dates for the next three months. Wenn eine Band fünf Monate lang mit dem Tourbus durch ganz Europa fährt und jeden Abend ein Konzert spielt mit E-Gitarren, Mikrophonen und Lautsprechern, wie viel klimaschädliches CO2 wird da wohl produziert? Das haben sich einige Musiker und Musikerinnen aus den USA gefragt und den Tour-Bus kurzerhand gegen Fahrräder eingetauscht.

Seit Mai touren fünf amerikanische Bands mit ihren Lastenrädern durch Europa. Auch der Strom, den die Bands für ihre Auftritte benötigen, wird von Fahrrädern erzeugt: Wenn das Publikum Musik hören will, so muss es auch in die Pedale treten.

Am 7. und 8. August 2010 machten die fünf Bands der “Pleasant Revolution Tour” Station in Wien. Gemeinsam mit österreichischen Musikern und Musikerinnen, wie Clara Luzia, veranstalteten sie das mobile “Bicycle Music Festival”. Musiziert wurde zwei Tage lang am Yppenplatz, im WUK und am Donaukanal. Aber auch am Weg zwischen den Veranstaltungsorten.

Das Bicycle Music Festival war mit seiner Pleasant Revolution Tour in Wien und brachte Energie in die Stadt: Human powered per fahrradbetriebener Soundanlage, fantasiegespeist durch Begeisterung und Kreativität der ProtagonistInnen aus den USA und der heimischen Community, getragen von sonntäglichem Sonnenschein am Stadtstrand. Es war ein Fest fürs Fahrrad und voller Freude, und es brachte eine neue Rad-Hymne mit sich.

“A new culture is coming – and it’s coming on a bike!!” singen die Ginger Ninjas und ihr begeistert tanzendes Publikum am Adria-Strand am Donaukanal, die Band gibt Vollgas, daneban strampeln ZuseherInnen auf stehenden Rädern. Denn auf 4 aufgebockten Lastenrädern wird von unermüdlichen StramplerInnen der Strom für die Verstärkeranlage erzeugt. Den ganzen Nachmittag schon hatten sich Bands und StromerzeugerInnen abgewechselt, nun geht langsam die Sonne unter und der Hauptact, die Ginger Ninjas, bringt nochmal Bewegung ins Tanzbein.

Schon seit Samstag zogen die MusikantInnen per Fahrrad durch Wien, am Vortag regenbedingt vom Eröffnungskonzert am Yppenplatz direkt ins WUK, um dort bis spät nachts mit Wiener Formationen abwechselnd für Stimmung zu Sorgen. Darunter war auch Clara Luzia, die zur Unterstützung des Events einen Solo-Auftritt beigesteuert hatte. Schon am Yppenplatz hatte Cello Joe mit seiner Kombination aus Cello und Beatboxing alle begeistert (Videos hier!).

In Wien gings nach Sonnenuntergang noch quer durch die Stadt. Livemusik mit Gitarre und Trompete von Lastenrädern (darunter das welterste Yuba-TallBike, freitags in der Bike Kitchen gebaut) begleitete die sponatane Critical Mass, ein wunderbarer nächtlicher Abschluss eines Sommersonntags mit Fahrrad und Musik. Das Bicyle Music Festival ist mit seiner Pleasant Revolution Tour endlich in Europa angekommen, und damit auch am 7.August in Wien! Die Band Ginger Ninjas startete 2007 in Nordkalifornien die Tour und spielte unzählige Konzerte, die sie bis in den Süden Mexicos führte – auf Fahrrädern!

Die gesamte Strecke von rund 8000 Kilometern legte die Band mit allem Equipment, Instrumenten und Soundsystem auf Rädern zurück. Nun haben sie per Schiff den großen Teich überquert …… und in Southampton angelegt, um von dort aus wieder in die Pedale zu treten und sich über Konzerte in Glastonbury und London ans Festland heranzutasten. Nicht nur die Fortbewegung wird per Rad erledigt, auch die Open-Air-Auftritte werden mit radelnd generiertem Strom durch Hochleistungsverstärker und supereffiziente Generatoren möglich.
Wenn das BMF in die Stadt kommt, werden öffentliche Plätze und Parks bespielt, dazwischen musizierend gemeinsam mit dem Publikum durch die Stadt geradelt und abschließend feste gefeiert.

Golden Ticket from the Embassy

When planning this tour, we thought it’d be a good idea to contact US embassies to see if they’d support bicycle music festivals. We’ve always been proud to represent an alternative idea of what America is about, and hoped some attaché types might agree. Seems like this one in particular does.

“The US Embassy in Berlin was delighted to help fund your performance because it showcases the breadth and diversity of U.S. music and environmentalism – as well as blasting German audiences with the fresh winds of your innovation, perseverance, earth stewardship and inspiration. The more we at the Embassy learned about the Bicycle Music Fest and all the values that underpin it, the more excited we were to have a hand in allowing hundreds (thousands?) of Germans to enjoy your music. Not merely to enjoy the event, but to help create it by powering the sound system, riding the bikes, broadcasting your show on their radio frequencies, accompanying you all on your rides through town, reproducing your bike technology if they wish, and so on. You and your fellow travelers enable the audience to plunge right into the experience, rather than sitting passively by. In this age of obesity, over-reliance on fossil fuels and the disengagement of young people from their governments, Pleasant Revolution encourages people to get out of their cars and engage with big problems like global climate change. The events themselves are a powerful metaphor: don’t just be entertained – get up, find your creativity and get involved! We were really happy that young Germans were able to witness one of the really amazing things about the US, namely the willingness of visionary, independent young people to follow their dreams and harness their energies to make a positive change in the world – and to have an incredible adventure in the process.

Mini-Bicycle Music Festival in Passau, Germany

Make sure not to “pass” on Passau..

CelloJoe and Kelly got to Passau a couple days before the rest of the group as they traveled along the Inn river bicycle path. Kelly had dislocated her shoulder while stretching with Joey, so they took a train to Passau from Bad Aibling. Joey got right to work the morning after they arrived by going to the Rathaus (city hall) and speaking with Rita Loher-Bronold from the Kultur Department about the city sponsoring a show. What a great decision to simply ask for help…the city hooked the Pleasant Revolution UP!

They gave us permits to play right in the heart of the town at two locations, provided us with a sumptuous meal at a traditional Bavarian restaurant, and put up our entire crew (17 people!) with hotel accommodations at a cyclists hotel called the Rotel Inn.

Some of the group went to see the largest organ in the world in the main cathedral of Passau. It has almost 18,000 pipes! It was amazing and sounded like alien music sometimes.

Local Bike Activists Bernd Sluka and Boris Burket helped with the organizing and were able to get our show announced on the radio and in the Passau Neue Press paper. And all of this happened in two days!

CelloJoe and FluLou opening for La Brass Banda in Passau, Germany 30 July 2010

Joey Chang aka CelloJoe and Louis Gaspar Alexander aka Flu Lou had a serendipitous opportunity to open for La Brass Banda (http://www.labrassbanda.com) in Passau, Germany, right on the border of Austria. They are a super awesome brass band from Bavaria. They play eastern European music and fuse it with Bavarian slang rapping. They did a tour through Bavaria on a tractor pulling a stage!

This show was the biggest show CelloJoe and FluLou have ever played. It was awesome! CelloJoe got the gig by playing on the street in front of the Cafe Bar the night before for 10 minutes and meeting Til, La Brass Banda’s manager. What luck! It just shows that you never know what kind of opportunities you’ll run into on the Pleasant Revolution Bicycle Music Tour. Wow, if I had said I don’t really feel like playing on the street right now, I wouldn’t have had the chance to open for such a cool band. I think we sold about 200 € worth of CDs. Plus, we got in to the sold out show for free and a bunch of the Pleasant Revolution crew, we drank tons of beer and ate a lot of bratwursts!

Proud to Play Passau, Germany

We have arrived in Passau! In route from Munich to Vienna, The Pleasant Revolution will play an impromptu music festival on Saturday, July 31st in Passau. Please take a look at the schedule below:
