Riding to Mexico City

Why we’re doing this crazy and how you could crazy with us

7:01 am, by tricky coyote

Some years ago, the Ginger Ninjas ventured by bicycle across the border from El Paso to Juarez, a couple of instruments on board. We got off the bikes and played a street market until 2am, got some people dancing, some drunks heckling, some singers along, even a pair of cops on beat on beat. It wasn’t the biggest show of our time, but it left a deep impression of the need for us to journey farther afield into the Mexico of our imaginations.

We thought we’d do it that year, or maybe the next. That was 2003. Now we’re ready, leaving on Halloween from our home in Northern California, bound for the South of Mexico. The route is 5000 miles, which we’ll cover by bicycle and maybe the occasional bus. We’ll be carrying with us our instruments and our new 800 Watt human powered sound system, living and traveling car-free on our so-called Pleasant Revolution.

Our self-contained, self-powered sound system enables a new kind of venue-independent touring, and we could use your help.

Do you live along our route? Or, do you know any cool/bikey/media/musicians/bands/green/hospitable folks who live along our
route
? We’re looking for people to help organize our shows and get other people to come, places to stay, unusual places to play, people with email lists, bands to play with, hotsprings to poach. Please scratch your head for a sec and email info (who it is, why s/he’s cool, how to contact) to syp@shakeyourpeace.com.
