Let the t.v. begin

6:29 pm, by tricky coyote

Our show starts tomorrow on MTV. It’s called “The Reality Show.” If you’ve heard us play or talk from stage, you might think we don’t like t.v. or big corporations. Well that used to be true but now that it’s about us, we changed our mind!

Just kidding. It’s more complicated than that. The truth is that we’ve dreamed of spreading our messages and music to a larger audience, especially an audience that mostly gets bombarded with flashy cars and gold chains and buybuybuytobecomesexysexysexy. So we’re stoked.

What do you think?

Don’t hate the media, become the media. Kudos to the Ginger Ninjas, your televised victory shows a crack in the system which is the epitome of the peaceful revolution we’re all after. ROCK ON!

Does anyone with cable and a tv want to have a Bay Area viewing party? It’d be fun to watch this with some fellow fans and friends. I’m in Berkeley, and you can reach me at 310 367 8723. Peace.

This is totally radical, so many young punks (such as myself) watch MTV and think everything aired on it is da’ shit. This will shock and confuse them, and then maybe rub in a little. :)

hey kipchoge and the ginger ninjas:

saw your reality thing on the glowing box this eve…SO cool to see REAL people on the perennially vapid MTV, finally! (wow, a bio-diesel magic bus, what a concept!!!) enjoyed especially, that yr audition tape didn’t mention the exact location of your (our?) little piece of coastal N.C. heaven. keep up the good work! if it wasn’t for your email bulletin, i never would have tuned in, and spread the good word about your work and music to all my friends. keep up that ‘net contact. are y’all in the bay area anytime soon? stuck here for now, and severely missing the river at present…need a good ginger ninjas fix!!!

    hola ninjas,

i am a little concerned over how much bad t.v. i am going to have to endure to see your segment in the upcoming weeks but nevertheless i am looking forward to it. hopefully kipchoge will become an overnight media sensation and change the world. if this goes well, who knows maybe a career in politics? you know how the masses love to elect celebrities and cult figures!
anywho, good luck. oh yeah that picture of cyndra ninja on the xtracycle…callipygian. peace.

Sorry to be a bummer here, but I think this really is going to pollute your message.

I can understand the intentions of wanting to spread the message of environmentalism, true freedom, and peace to potentially millions of viewers (and be a little McLuhanish, e.g., ‘The Medium is the Message), but reality TV is a TERRIBLE forum.

Reality TV is about humiliating/denigrating its subjects. Just watch “The Comeback” on HBO–it got to the heart of what reality TV is.

Trust me–your show is going to be edited to provide “comic relief” for MTV’s typical demographic–18 to 27 year old consumers. It’s going to reinforce stereotypes about living off the grid, acting sustainably, and truly living a free, independent, non-conformist life.

Part of me wonders if this is truly about the message or about creating a Cult of Kipchoge. There is a bit of ego-tism to this whole thing (a la Abby Hoffman). But the optimist in my hopes that it is not, that some positive messages will get through the brutal editing that will emerge, and that maybe a few hearts and minds will be changed to live a non-consumerist life one day in the future.

  9. Jim Says:

I disagree Steven. While I see your point about reality TV editing, I think some viewers, at least a per cent or two, will say, “those Xtracycles are really g-d cool!” If that happens, it is progress, in my view. Those who will have their off-the-grid stereotypes reinforced are probably not particularly receptive to Kipchoge’s message anyway.

  10. Katie Bausler Says:

Your “competition” on the MTV poll are not worthy of the term. Your message is what the world needs to keep on spinning and you are right on for doing the most you can to cut through the commercialized mass.

  11. Jessica Says:

I watched your show last night and was intrigued. I was disappointed that they put you on the “bottom 3″. However, the show did lead me to your website which is chalked full of good resources for people that would like to make a difference via their lifestyle choices, but need a little direction when it comes to finding alternative methods of living. Not an egotistical move at all. I wish you luck in your quest and wanted you to know that your message is spreading.

  12. Skeeter McTweeter Says:

The Cult of Kipchoge continues on! Steven H, you hit it on the head brother. I was familiar with Kipchoge during his days at Stanford, and there is definitely more than a bit of egotism involved. Will leave it at that, I know that I’ll get killed with emails to the contrary.

  13. Nicole Says:

Love you on MTV. The others are a bunch of dumbasses with Andy as their mascot. You got me interested, and my boyfriend and my roomates. Thats at least 4 people in Boston who want to learn more about your lifestyle and alternative methods of sustainability. Thanks. Don’t let Andy intimidate you or MTV shape your show into something to laugh at. Be ready with a few comebacks for him next time, you have to stay sharp.

  14. tricky coyote Says:

thanks, nicole. I did actually have some good comebacks for andy but they all got edited out… what i really need to do is figure out how to take a little more control of the format. not sure how, ideas welcome. main thing is not that they’ll censor me, but I have to be extremely quick because they’ll only give me a second or two…

  15. mystery poster Says:

Hey Steven and Skeeter, as far as egotistical personalities are concerned what better vehicles to use for this down and dirty job of media out reach. I mean who else is willing to make the sacrifices of being a MTV reality star. Kipchoge is well informed and sincere in the message of ‘wake up America, try this out’ and he might even have the stamina to pull it off. The latter may very well depend on that egotistical side of his big heart. Note: Cult Kipchoge definitely lives on.
